The Dress, the Dress, the Dress: Prom Styles for a Beautiful Night

Prom dress styles range from very modest vintage-style gowns to modern asymmetrical cuts. When choosing a style, it is important to keep in mind how flattering the shape is, how well it fits the personality of the person wearing it, and how formal the dance will be. Choosing a dress that fits these ideals will help make the young lady wearing it at ease throughout the evening of the big dance.

Classic and Formal
Classic dresses are generally floor length. Skirt styles range from A-lines to ball gowns, and while some garments are sleeveless, most formal dresses will have straps or sleeves. Colors can be bold and saturated or demure neutrals. This style is best for those looking for a traditional prom experience. Wearing this style of gown allows for more liberal accessories, such as chandelier earrings or thick bracelets. Classic looks often include textiles like lace, sequins, and pearls.

Modern
Modern dresses come in many different forms, as they are often based upon the latest fashion trends. In the past decade, dresses have become increasingly more casual and have included off-the-shoulder, one-shoulder, and above-the-knee varieties. A new style of dress, the high-low, is short in front and long in back with a floor-sweeping train. Modern styles diverge from the monochromatic, or single color, tradition to embrace a combination of contrasting hues. Modern looks are best for those who want to stand out or experiment with the latest trends.

Vintage
Vintage dresses are popular because they are unique yet easy to wear and accessorize. These old-school styles reflect a variety of eras, most notable 1940s Hollywood. Because they are relics from a simpler time, they are generally conservative and floor-length. A plus size prom dress often will often embody this style because of its ability to flatter a natural waistline. Because the dress is vintage, it is encouraged to spice up the accompanying jewelry and hairstyles with modern twists.

Cocktail
Cocktail dresses were once a no-go for proms, but in modern times have found their place as a fun, flirty alternative to formal wear. Little black dresses, a long-standing female favorite, can now be worn to the big dance. To counterbalance a cocktail style, consider a formal up-do with more formal jewelry. Avoid showing too much skin by choosing low, conservative heels.

From the modern high/low to the vintage-inspired floor grazer, prom styles are varied and can fit a number of personalities. By taking into consideration cut, color, style and accessories, dance goers can create a personalized look that they will be happy with for years to come.
